Family preparedness in New Orleans | 05.19.2006 | 08:20:43 | Views: 5794 | ID: May 19 '06: Emergency management officials along with state and local authorities are holding Family Preparedness Day in New Orleans this coming Sunday, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's website announced Friday. The event's goal is to help families plan "for the uncertainty of the upcoming hurricane season." Along with FEMA, members of the private sector, the state's Departments of Health and Hospitals, Transportation and Development and the Louisiana State Police, and state and local officials will help to provide information on how to prepare evacuation measures, stock-up on supplies and learn more about health concerns in the event of a natural disaster. Other programs like Ready Kids in the Department of Homeland Security illustrate ways for families to make emergency supply kits, emergency plans and additional information for parents and teachers to help prepare children and families for disasters. Currently, there are similar state programs such as Florida's Family Disaster Preparedness Page, and in Illinois, Community Emergency Response Team classes sponsored by DHS work "to engage citizens in homeland security and family preparedness through public education and outreach, training and volunteer service." At the New Orleans event on Sunday at Tulane University, the schedule of events will include a children's workshop, information for pet owners on steps to protect their animals, psychological support and training to help children cope with large disasters, guides to disaster preparedness, and materials to teach families how to make communication and emergency evacuation plans. Children will also be encouraged to immunize against waterborne diseases. The Greater New Orleans Immunization Network will be at the event and works "to protect all children from vaccine preventable diseases."
