National Disaster Medical System | 05.29.2006 | 07:33:51 | Views: 5388 | ID: May 29 '06: Potential new changes in the structure of the Department of Homeland Security would mean that the National Disaster Medical System would not longer be under the control of the Department, Congress Daily reported last week. "The bill ... calls for removing the National Disaster Medical System from the purview of Homeland Security within nine months," the Daily reported. "The system is charged with supporting federal agencies in managing and coordinating federal medical disaster response, including for natural disaster, bioterrorism attacks, technological disasters and major transportation accidents." The proposed House bill's goal is to strengthen the federal agency so that it would not "suffer the fate of" FEMA, Democratic Rep. John Dingell from Michigan said. Congress Daily reported, "The measure places the system ... back under the purview of the Health and Human Services Department, undoing a shift made in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks." According to the NDMS' website, "It is the mission of the National Disaster Medical System to design, develop, and maintain a national capability to deliver quality medical are to the victims of - and responders to - a domestic disaster." There are three major areas of the system which include: a medical response to a disaster through the deployment of logistics and equipment; helping to move victims of a disaster move out of harm's way; and subsequently treating victims of a disaster.
