Penn State counterterrorism center to hold terror psychology conference | 07.03.2006 | 06:55:55 | Views: 5128 | ID: July 3: The Digital Collegian, a newspaper published by University of Pennsylvania students, reported Monday that a newly created on-campus center dedicated to counterterrorism will hold a conference in October "that will delve into the psychology behind terrorism." The International Center for the Study of Terrorism, which opened its doors in May of this year, will host "leading psychology professors from all over the world" who will discuss "their knowledge of the psychology behind terrorism during the October conference." The ICST, was created to bring together "experts from both sides of the Atlantic and from other countries to investigate the root causes of this worldwide phenomenon, understand its long-term effects on society and identify new ways of safeguarding individuals, organizations and communities," the Penn State website read. The ICST is part of the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN), an invitation-only group of 16 universities in the United States, United Kingdom, mainland Europe and China "that pool their research strengths to address topics of major significance, from climate change to wireless communications," and worldwide terrorism. To join the universities must pay a one-time fee of $50,000. Additionally, six major areas of research have been created: Scientific studies relating to climate change and biotechnology; information and communications technology; the Earth sciences; social sciences such as the effects of globalization and education; health and human sciences; and the arts and humanities. On its website WUN announced the launch of the terrorism center. Kevin Murphy, psychology professor and director of ICST told the Digital Collegian, "Within a year, I imaging the center will attract graduate students and post-graduate students. ... The center is an example of one of many ways of establishing security concerns for academics."
