Private sector organizations using RFID to help with efficiency and tracking in cooperative efforts with government | 07.05.2006 | 07:38:02 | Views: 5970 | ID: July 5 '06: The use of mobile tracking technology can be helpful for emergency management coordination and for tracking terrorists, proponents of radio frequency identification say. Government Computer News reported Monday that according to a report released by the Public Policy Institute of California, RFID tracking on shipping containers would help "to enhance the efficiency of the global containerized supply chain may do more to prevent terrorist groups from using container shipping as a conveyor of weapons." Health Management Technology reported in its July 2006 issue that new patient-tracking technologies are helping medical first responders respond to a large-scale emergency. By having patient information available on mobile devices used by responders, "data [are] immediately accessible to multiple providers and healthcare facilities 24/7. Emergency responders perform the identification process during triage, at which time a bar code is scanned and attacked to a patient's wrist." By placing RFID in shipping containers, port security officials and personnel would be able to locate and track containers. The RFID sensors "would operate from the time of loading all the way through the point of unloading." The cost of installing RFID trackers is about $500 to $1,200 per container, though by having the RFID technology installed, the report said that as much as $2 billion could be saved because of improved shipping and tracking efficiency.
