After the department's announcement of the updated Ready.gov site, a departmental press release said that more than 200 national, regional, state and local governments and organizations were cooperating in the September preparedness campaign. Under Secretary for Preparedness George Foresman said in the release, "Every American has a personal responsibility to ensure that their family is prepared for the unexpected. ... Through this effort, the Department of Homeland Security and the National Preparedness Month Coalition will encourage all Americans to be ready before emergencies happen." The list of participants organized to help play a role in the campaign include government agencies like DHS and the Departments of Labor, Energy, Commerce and Agriculture. Private sector partners include the American Red Cross, American Nurses Association and even the American Kennel Club, to name only a few of the 200-plus organizations. As the month draws closer, "organizations will provide information, host events and sponsor activities that disseminate emergency preparedness messages to their customers, members and employees, stakeholders and communities across the nation," the DHS release read. Underlying the department's efforts are two fundamental projects sponsored by Ready.gov and DHS. The Ready Campaign and Citizen Corps which seek to bolster individual preparedness through public service announcements and educational programs. Citizen Corps, a grassroots program "localizes preparedness messages and provides opportunities for citizens to get emergency response in training; participate in community exercises; and volunteer to support local first responders."
