Private Sector Announcements: understanding the responsibility of businesses in community response | 10.08.2006 | 08:43:21 | Views: 5337 | ID: In most cases, many people in the community who are not involved in community response or disaster preparedness, local or state government or any private sector industry not involved with disaster response do not know what to do, or whom to call, or even find out where to obtain information when the disaster strikes. More often than not, public service announcements, government websites with important information (whether federal, state or local) and even public comment initiatives occur outside the mainstream culture of America. Even when the disaster response culture may well know an existing, ongoing initiative - such as National Preparedness Month in September - any layperson will not know about it, nor will know how to obtain information about the subject. In cooperation with local and state services, radio stations, and cable and satellite television or even email, governments and businesses can take the opportunity every month or week to remind the community about certain initiatives - however those announcements should come at a time when people are paying attention. It would be a 30 second reminder during a half time show at a football game, a commercial or announcement during prime time television, and announcements on commercial and public radio. For instance - if a local company were a sponsor of a Friday night football game, then the school could give that sponsor an additional announcement slot during the first half of the game about a preparedness initiative that could help the community learn about what is being planned. Other businesses need to understand the value of being active in their community, and that by playing such a large role the in overall economic and cultural health of the country, it reinforces for others in the private sector to actively engage in community preparedness. By actively engaging in community preparedness and education, the private sector can help to ensure the economic stability of a community while the local or state government can help to support public services and resources for disaster preparedness and response.
