Wireless and mobile technology allow for moveable WiFi network | 11.15.2006 | 03:08:20 | Views: 5568 | ID: November 15 '06: The Joint Task Force Civil Support is developing a wireless network technology that could have potential first responder application to help establish wireless networks in short amounts of time to help federal responder forces work with state and local emergency services during a chemical, nuclear, radiological, or nuclear attack, FCW.com reported this week. The development of the Wireless for the Warfighter technology was designed initially by the US Joint Forces Command and links field units with the Defense Department into a complete wireless communications system, Casemate, an Army publication reported. W4W, as the wireless network is called, was designed with maneuverability and expediency in mind. Lt. Col. Curtis Fox, the Chief of the JTF-CS Communications Directorate's Deployable Operations Division told Casemate, "Our mission is two-fold - all the planning that goes into a CBRNE response and then to deploy and take command and control of DoD forces. ... The quicker you can do that, the quicker you can start saving lives." Currently, the technology can provide communications system abilities for more than 100 people working at a disaster response site. With plug-in components, W4W can handle more than 400 responders, FCW reported. Eventually, the technology will be able to provide a moveable, wireless network which can be set up in a matter of hours and provide WiFi communications abilities in up to a 10-mile bubble, officials told FCW.
