Oklahoma power grid security providing model for country | 12.20.2006 | 07:13:33 | Views: 5970 | ID: December 20 '06: Security upgrades and measures put into place in Oklahoma since 2002 to increase the level of protection for the state's power grid and infrastructure could provide a helpful example of best practices used in creating a secure and robust electrical and power system, officials said according to Utility Automation & Engineering T&D. The security measures being implemented were begun through a joint effort between the Department of Homeland Security, the FBI and other federal agencies with the cooperation of Oklahoma Gas & Electric and the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Howard Motley, the vice president of regulatory affairs for OG&E told Utility, "Since 2002, we have worked very closely with the Oklahoma Commission to establish a standard for necessary security measures and to improve the security of our electric system." Motley said the new measures could provide a helpful example of "protection of a state's utility infrastructure," and that funds for the project came in a slight increase in energy prices paid by consumers. "Since July 2006, customers have been paying a few cents more each month for such measures as increased security personnel at key locations, added protection of certain facilities and additional security technology."
