FCC planning national interoperable wireless network | 12.21.2006 | 06:25:45 | Views: 5569 | ID: December 21 '06: The BBC reported Thursday that the Federal Communications Commission has announced its plans to build a broadband national wireless network which will interoperably link first responders to help bolster communication abilities during national disasters. Officials at the FCC said their desire to build the network came after hearing testimony from first responders who present during the attacks on Sept. 11 and during Hurricane Katrina. The communications network will be built with partnership from the private sector, the BBC reported. FCC Commissioner Robert McDowell told the British news service, "Our country is teeming with entrepreneurs, willing and able to invest and take risks necessary to accelerate the development and roll-out of advanced services." The network will be built using the 700MHz band and will be wireless so that data, voice and other information can be disseminated and communicated to police, fire and medical responders. "The planned network would use an IP-based infrastructure, the same system that underpin[s] the internet and allows interoperability among many different devices," the BBC continued. Currently, the United Kingdom has a similar interoperable service, however it is only for voice communications and does not allow data transfer, the BBC reported.
