FEMA to fund hurricane hazard plan for New Orleans | 03.20.2007 | 06:09:57 | Views: 5478 | ID: March 20 '07: The Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Port of New Orleans have entered into an agreement whose goal would be to mitigate the impact of any future hurricane along the Gulf Coast, a FEMA press release announced. About $50,000 in federal funding was earmarked for the project. Gary LaGrange, the president and CEO of the Port of New Orleans said in the press release, "We greatly appreciate FEMA's assistance in this matter. ... This grant will allow the Port to develop an individual Hazard Mitigation Plan so we may act independently of the city in applying to FEMA for future assistance following catastrophic events." The Port of New Orleans employs more than 160,000 people and has 22 miles of wharves and terminals. The grant program "provides grants to States and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures after a major disaster declaration, to reduce the loss of life and property due to natural disasters and to enable mitigation measures to be implemented during the immediate recovery from a disaster," the press release said.
