Rhode Island hospital system develops new web-based information-sharing network | 03.27.2007 | 05:19:27 | Views: 5529 | ID: March 27 '07: Rhode Island health officials have announced a new web-based service which will allow medical officials in the state's hospital system to share real-time information including video and imaging as well as data to help increase awareness about the status of hospitals the Kent County Daily Times reported. The system, called the Hospital Capacity System "was officials implemented at the end of last month in hospitals, at the Rhode Island Department of Health, at emergency service operators' offices, inside city and town emergency dispatch centers and with other designated entities," the Daily Times continued. The HCS replaces a former system of communicating between hospitals using two-way radios. Hopkins Hill Fire Chief Frank Brown said, "It is a great system. ... Our communication has absolutely improved as has the speed in which that communication happens." Officials also said that confusion about the status of many hospital emergency rooms vacancies and existing resources has been eliminated. Brown continued to say, "With the old system, we had to make phone calls to each of the hospitals to find out what their status was. Now, with the HCS, it gives us real-time data on the status right there. ... Just by looking at the screen, we can immediately see the status of each site, saving us a lot of time." The system works by listing all the hospitals in Rhode Island complete with either a green dot and an "A" indicating bed vacancies, or a red dot signified by a "D" for diverting indicating a full hospital, and finally a blue dot with an "F" for a forced open. Those three signals are also boosted by additional information about each hospital on the screen.
