Colorado using new visual mapping technology to boost response management capabilities | 03.27.2007 | 05:46:31 | Views: 5445 | ID: March 27 '07: Colorado officials said they have recently begun to use several types of visual mapping technology along with web-based location tracking software to create a "mashup" application which can locate specific events and also give accurate weather forecasts for the area to help responders adequately adjust, FCW.com reported. According to FCW, "The state is implementing WeatherBug's GIS Data Services in its Emergency Operations Center and will also work to integrate the capability into a Web-based common operational picture viewer. ... WeatherBug, a provider of local weather information, delivers its GIS Data Services offering as an ESRI Web service. ... The Web service lets organizations integrate live weather information culled from WeatherBug's 8,000 tracking stations into GIS-based decision support systems." Officials at Colorado's state Emergency Operations Center told FCW that they take the data and are "working to integrate the WeatherBug weather data feed into the common operations picture viewer. The viewer will enable emergency responders working in different agencies or locations to see the same information." An official at WeatherBug told FCW that there are more than 50 federal, state and local agencies using a similar mashup and are evaluating the software for their police, fire and emergency management operations.
