Report finds that adequate States interops funding was not supported by sufficient federal coordination | 04.03.2007 | 07:07:39 | Views: 5842 | ID: April 3 '07: A new report released by the Government Accountability Office has found that federal coordination and oversight of state-run interoperable communications upgrades and programs lacked a strategy to integrate the various plans being put into place around the country. More than $2 billion in federal was given between 2003 and 2005 but there was no national plan "to coordinate investments across states." However, plans have been put into place by the Department of Homeland Security to secure state-run interoperable plans which would integrate local communications by the end of 2007. The report also found that improvements to interoperable communications systems have been hampered in large part because of ambiguities in the federal and private sectors' construction of interoperable networks. "Until DHS modifies its grant guidance," the report continued, "states and localities are likely to continue to purchase expensive equipment that provides them with minimal additional benefits," and a lack of a coordinated and federal protocol.
