New fire evacuation guide developed for disabled | 04.10.2007 | 07:18:32 | Views: 6027 | ID: April 10 '07: The National Fire Protection Association has released a new guide to help disabled persons safely evacuate an area in case of a fire. The NFPA Emergency Evacuation Planning Guide "was developed with input from the disability community to provide general information," to help during a fire emergency. In the guide, five general areas of preparedness and response are outlined: mobility, visual, hearing, speech, and cognitive impairments which all issue their own set of criteria. The guide also "features a checklist that building services managers and people with disabilities can use to design a personalized evacuation plan," the website read. In the guide, the NFPA wrote that working with local elderly communities and their care givers to prepare and plan for disasters will help to reduce causalities, increase preparedness and help to mitigate losses. The NFPA's guide also includes information about "operational, planning, and response elements necessary to develop a well-thought-out plan for evacuating a building or taking other appropriate action in the event of an emergency."(Click below to download file) evacuationguide.pdf
