Mass university practices emergency response drills | 04.11.2007 | 07:13:40 | Views: 5631 | ID: April 11 '07: Members of the University of Massachusetts' Medical Response Corps will participate in an emergency response drill with the cooperation of community and local health and government leaders, the Daily Collegian reported. The exercises will coincide with other similar drills in Western Massachusetts. The drill will simulate an outbreak of meningitis. "The MRC, a group of staff, faculty, students and local officials - will set up an emergency dispensing site similar to the distribution of the appropriate meningitis drugs and will also be taped for later presentations and analysis," the Daily Collegian reported. Ann Becker, MRC coordinator and Public Health Nurse at the University Health Services told the college daily, "If we look at the University as a community, then this is emergency preparedness and we're doing that practical work. ... A lot of students are stepping up to get involved. They want to be conscious of what happens in their community and take part." In addition to university faculty, staff and students, local officials and the ROTC will help in planning the event so that all involved can get an idea about the level of involvement each member of the community must make.Similar exercises were held in California earlier this year.
