Severe weather conference in Baltimore to highlight hurricane preparedness | 04.13.2007 | 08:18:06 | Views: 6664 | ID: April 13 '07: Severe weather experts, state and local government officials and emergency response personnel were on-hand in Baltimore for the 22nd Annual Severe Storms Awareness Conference, a local NBC affiliate, WBAL reported. Attendees of the conference focused on ways Maryland communities could prepare for hurricanes. National Hurricane Center Director Bill Proenza told WBAL, "Last year's suppression of the the hurricane season is gone. We are probably headed to a more active season." Currently, forecasters are calling for a very active hurricane season. Hurricane expert for the Weather Channel, Dr. Steve Lyons told the news channel, "The seasonal forecast is calling for an above-average season. Some of the forecasters (are calling for) as high as 17 named storms - some of them as low as 7." The conference on Thursday was hosted by the Maryland Emergency Management Agency and developed emergency preparedness plans formulated at last year's conference.
