NCPC President Alfonso E. Lenhardt said "Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and all those touched by this tragic event. ... This situation shows that every institution of higher learning is vulnerable to the most devastating violence plaguing society. It is incumbent upon leaders to work for prevention but plan for all potential violent situations." Some of the recommendations the NCPC made were: to create a more community-based crime prevention program by including faculty, staff and students with law enforcement activities; developing contingency and preparedness response plans for emergency situations; improving communications; having open, clear and concurrent security dialogue with parents and students; and use information and situational awareness knowledge to increase and help law enforcement. The group is best known for its "McGrugg the Crime Dog" and the subsequent "Take A Bite Out Of Crime" campaign. The NCPC is also the acting secretariat for the Crime Prevention Coalition of America which has more than 400 federal, state, local and private organizations working to reduce crime in the U.S..
