Ardent Sentry to coordinate Canadian and U.S. state and local response | 05.01.2007 | 06:38:17 | Views: 6162 | ID: May 1 '07: According to a press release from the U.S. Northern Command, the U.S., and Canadian governments will cooperate with state and local authorities in Alaska, Indiana and Rhode Island, among other northern East Coast states during the response exercise called Ardent Sentry-Nothern Edge 07. The exercise will be the largest NORTHCOM has organize and will be held from April 30 to May 18. In a fact sheet released on the NORTHCOM site, the nuclear, hurricane and terrorist response exercise was designed to "provide local, state, federal, Department of Defense (DOD), and non-governmental organizations and agencies ... the opportunity to participate in a full range of training scenarios" to help prepare for disaster response and crisis management and cooperation. Specifically, the exercise will work to improve interagency/intergovernmental communications; boost response capabilities of the National Guard; help train civil authorities for a response to chemical, biological, nuclear or radiological attack; and to improve cooperation and collaboration between the U.S. and Canadian governments. Mike Kucharak, a spokesman for NORTHCOM told Agence France-Presse, "The intent obviously is to stress the system." AFP continued, "The peak of the exercise will come next week when a hurricane bears into Rhode Island under one scenario, and an improvised nuclear device is detonated in Indiana in another. ... Interspersed with those crises will be simulated terrorist actions in Alaska, some of which will take place at sea while others will involve aircraft.
