Oakland bridge collapse good model for response to terrorist attack using tankers | 05.02.2007 | 07:53:54 | Views: 5758 | ID: May 2 '07: Security experts told the San Francisco Chronicle that a recent tanker crash, which spewed thousands of gallons of fuel causing a massive fire and the subsequent collapse of a busy overpass in the San Francisco metro area, highlights the dangers posed by potential terrorists who would use similar tactics by employing tankers as weapons. Christopher Falkenburg, the president of Insight Security and a former Secret Service agent told the paper, "It's very difficult now to purchase explosives ... but it's not that hard to steal a truck full of gasoline, and you can do quite a bit of damage. ... You don't need access to sophisticated explosives to have a big impact." And while truck drivers already have background security screenings through the Transportation Security Administration, John Conley, the president of the National Tank Truck Carriers Inc. said that hijacking or stealing of tankers is "certainly a concern. ... Somebody stealing a cargo tank and doing something bad with it. Once the truck is out the gate it is out there, and it is vulnerable to somebody who would be willing to go after it and hijack it." Officials in California's Department of Homeland Security said they will investigate the April 30 accident for ways to increase security and resilience of critical infrastructure. However federal officials said they were not investigating the incident.(Click below to download file) nationalrdinfrastructureplan.pdf
