DHS announces new infrastructure protection framework | 05.23.2007 | 07:47:04 | Views: 5233 | ID: May 23 '07: In a departmental release, Homeland Security officials announced the completion of an infrastructure protection set of guidelines designed to support the National Infrastructure Protection Plan. The NIPP was designed to identify, classify and define the nation's critical infrastructure and to help find ways to securing it against natural and man-made threats. Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said in the release that the plans would help to significantly strengthen "vital infrastructure and [to reduce] vulnerability to all hazards." The NIPP guidelines would also include public and private sector cooperation and coordination to help "avoid imposing onerous security measures that would damage or make economically impractical the very systems we're trying to protect." Of the objectives, the guidelines set out to secure national delivery systems, networks and functions essential for every continuance of operations; help to "reconstitute critical assets, systems and networks after an incident"; plan for events and ways to prepare; and to help facilitate information-sharing among all levels of government and private sector and to educate those in necessary fields and arenas. The guidelines were established through public/private cooperation between federal, state and local governments and the private sector.(Click below to download file) regional-disaster-guide.pdf
