AT&T business continuity survey finds gaps in preparedness programs | 06.11.2007 | 08:59:02 | Views: 7065 | ID: June 11 '07: Computer World reported gaps in business emergency response and continuity planning according to a new study released by AT&T. The study's findings, announced in a press release revealed that 30 percent of those business polled were not prepared for a worst-case scenario. Businesses in New York ranked first, while Cleveland came in last. Computer World reported, "The rankings were based primarily on three criteria: the state of a city's business continuity plan; whether the city has adequately educated employees about the plan and installed systems to implement it; and on cybersecurity policies and the use of managed security." And though man-made threats such as cyber-attacks ranked as the leading cause for concern, "Government warnings of impending disaster do not seem to carry much weight to private sector IT executives." Additionally, smaller and medium-sized companies are less prepared than their large counterparts with about 36% saying "continuity planning is not a priority/not important. Smaller businesses are also less likely to have a business continuity plan in place," the AT&T press release read. The survey found that businesses in areas hit hardest by disasters had the most preparedness programs in place. "New York and Houston (which ranked first and second, respectively) indicated that business continuity planning has become a priority in recent years because of natural disasters, security and terrorist threats. ... Conversely, Cleveland executives believe that the probability of a disaster causing business disruption is small." AT&T also said in its press release that it can provide disaster response and continuity operations management programs to smaller companies. "The company also conducts Network Disaster Recovery exercises several times a year that are designed to test, refine, and strengthen AT&T's business continuity and disaster-response services."(Click below to download file) business_continuity_study_results.pdf
