Rail security group releases report | 06.18.2007 | 07:42:36 | Views: 5258 | ID: June 18 '07: Citizens for Rail Safety recently partnered with Penn State to release a new report which looks at current security measures in place to protect the nation's railroads and ways to highlight "glaring holes" so that they can avert the threat of a terrorist attack. The report chronicles the lack of cooperation among federal, state and local levels while according to research from Penn State, "Congress needs to pass comprehensive rail security legislation and allocate adequate financial and administrative resources to enhance security efforts." Railroad security pitfalls were also highlighted in Monday morning's edition of NPR's Morning Edition. The radio article reported on the current battle between chemical and railroad industry and state and local governments over where to transport highly toxic chemicals and whether new routes to circumvent cities should be created. Those sentiments were addressed in the report released by CRS. Executive Director Patricia Abbate said, "Citizens have the right to know what travels through their communities. ... The time of a disaster is not the time to start devising plans. there should be practices in place that facilitate a coherent and efficient response plan."(Click below to download file) railpennstatestudy.pdf
