Charleston blaze kills 9 firefighters | 06.19.2007 | 06:54:11 | Views: 5450 | ID: June 19 '07: The Associated Press reported that a huge blaze at a furniture warehouse in Charleston, S.C. has killed nine firefighters who responded to the inferno. While nine died, two warehouse employees were rescued according to City Mayor Joseph P. Riley during a morning news conference. As of 10:00 am Tuesday, additional problems occurred after local Charleston news websites were unavailable - presumably due to the high volume of traffic being placed on the servers. According to witnesses, the nine men died after they entered the warehouse and the fire caused the collapse of the roof creating a "tornado of flames," one local firefighter to respond to the call said. During the news conference, Mayor Riley lauded the bravery of the nine who died saying, "This is a profession that we must never take for granted. ... There's a fire raging and they go toward it. Upon removing the nine men from the warehouse, CNN broadcast images of fellow emergency workers saluting their fallen comrades. Officials are investigating the cause of the blaze.
