Resident response plan in Florida communities | 07.02.2007 | 08:30:17 | Views: 6395 | ID: July 2 '07: In Palm Beach County, local officials have said they are working to include residents in disaster response operations through the Cities Readiness Initiative the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported. The program is part of a larger national effort directed by the Centers for Disease Control. Currently, there are 21 cities participating in CRI, according to the CDC's website. In Palm Beach County, Dianne Laubert, the senior director of communications for the United Way of Palm Beach County told the Sun-Sentinel, "Our role is to help recruit and train volunteers should a situation occur in our community. Just like when the hurricane comes through, we set up a volunteer reception center, and that's where all the volunteers come." Those who sign up to CRI will be on a three to four-day on-call shift. CRI volunteers and their families also receive priority medical treatment after an incident so that they can help with the response measures. Currently, Palm Beach County is looking for 6,000 volunteers.
