Partnership in U.K. coordinating academic and scientific communities for disaster response | 07.25.2007 | 03:38:09 | Views: 5606 | ID: July 25 '07: In the United Kingdom, a partnership between academia, the scientific community and local emergency response organizations is working to "explore the interface between physical and social science approaches to managing disaster risk and uncertainty." The partnership, called the Science and POlice Interfaces for Disaster Reduction, or SPIDER Network, was founded in 2006 and is primarily focused on disaster mitigation research. Meanwhile, in the U.K., a series of the worst floods the country has seen in recent modern times has stranded thousands in Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire, and other areas, the BBC reported. "About 350,000 people in Gloucestershire without tap water are getting supplies." The SPIDER Network's main foundation lay in a series of linked meetings that work on "developing interdisciplinary collaborative partnerships." One such meeting at Coventry University focused on how recent disasters such as volcanic eruptions, earthquakes and landslides and impending climate change affects disaster response in the field.
