Massachusetts to rework state's emergency response apparatus | 08.27.2007 | 07:00:36 | Views: 6958 | ID: August 27 '07: The Associated Press reported new plans from Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick to overhaul the state's emergency response apparatus. The governor also said the new effort will coincide with a public awareness campaign in September to raise emergency preparedness education in the state "to preserve critical resources for first responders by encouraging the general public to develop personal and family emergency response plans." Details for the new emergency planning will include charging the Massachusetts State Police "with overseeing the large-scale movement of traffic and the government will make plans for three large evacuation centers across the state. A task force will also oversee 10 conferences where agencies can coordinate dealing with vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, disabled and infirm." Additionally, Governor Patrick said he wants "the State Police to develop large-scale traffic plans beyond the capital city's borders. Currently, piecemeal plans exist throughout the state, with no coordinating authority," the AP reported. The public awareness campaign, entitled "Help Us Help You" will begin in September - also National Emergency Preparedness Month.
