Louisiana program protects animals during disasters | 09.10.2007 | 06:58:06 | Views: 5736 | ID: September 10 '07: In Louisiana, state and local emergency officials have additional help during disasters through a partnership between veterinarians, university health representatives and first responders. The Louisiana State Animal Response Team has published an emergency preparedness manual for pet owners and has held summits focusing on best practices for the veterinarian community. The program, begun two years ago, "is the operations arm of the ESF-11 (emergency support function 11 - all official emergency response having to do with animals in the state of Louisiana) an is under the jurisdiction of Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry," The Horse.com reported. Working to educate the public as well as the veterinarian community, LSART has held summits "bringing together more than 150 people representing government agencies, non-government organizations, equine interest groups, producer groups, agriculture organizations, and independent volunteers to identify resource gaps," in Louisiana, the Horse continued. To help supplement LSART's work, the Louisiana State University's School of Veterinary Medicine will add a course called "The Role of the Large Animal Veterinarian in Community Disaster Response" to the curriculum.(Click below to download file) lsart-getting-prepared-powerpoint.pdf
