Charleston, South Carolina using GIS navigation in emergency response vehicles | 09.27.2007 | 06:47:47 | Views: 5383 | ID: September 27 '07: On the ESRI homepage a press release announced a new emergency vehicle tracking and situational awareness technology which has been installed on Charleston, South Carolina's EMS fleet. The new geographic information system (GIS) was first installed earlier this year and has since been approved to put into use in selected emergency response vehicles. Officials working in Charleston said the new technology has helped them gain a better understanding of their resources, the locations of those resources and the ability for the emergency response personnel to answer calls. Don Lundy, the EMS director for Charleston County said the new system "helps dispatchers visually understand, before and incident occurs, where vehicles are, what the coverage is, and where they need to be." About 35 vehicles have the new GIS technology installed. When a call is issued, "EMS dispatchers can visually identify a location of an incident, the nearest or quickest EMS response vehicle, and best route for sending a dispatch," ESRI said. "Additional data such as vehicle speed, location, and direction are relayed to the computer aided dispatch (CAD) system." Street plans, uploaded to databases in real-time are also accessible to the GIS-enabled vehicles which can pull that information, as well as other data, from a wireless connection.
