California fire response under review by Governor-appointed panel | 11.08.2007 | 08:37:45 | Views: 5172 | ID: November 8 '07: California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has ordered a review of Southern California's response to the recent wildfires which burned more than 2,000 homes, the NBC affiliate in San Diego reported. Gov. Schwarzenegger has said a task force will look into ways that response efforts could be tweaked to produce better results for the future. "Schwarzenegger asked the task force to study not only if California had enough fire engines and personnel to coordinate its response, but also to look at whether the state should allow homes and businesses to be built in areas most prone to wildfires. And, if so, should those building have to meet higher fire-resistant standards," the NBC station, KNSD, reported. The governor said, however, that the response was textbook and that response efforts were excellent, officials said. Aaron McLear, the spokesman for the governor's office said, "The governor believes the state did a great job in its response to the fires, but we should always be asking ourselves what additional steps we need to take to do even better." "He is calling on the experts to examine the most recent fires and to make additional recommendations to ensure we are always improving our fire response," McLear continued.
