New Mexico responders to get wireless networks to help with response communications | 11.08.2007 | 09:08:55 | Views: 5479 | ID: November 8 '07: In Los Lunas, New Mexico, first responders will begin to use WiFi to communicate interoperably using the one of the largest wireless communications system of its type in North America, a press release has announced. The network was established by Vivato Networks which was recently acquired byCatcher Holdings Inc.. Responders will use laptop and mobile devices developed by Catcher. Responders in New Mexico will use the mobile technology instead of traditional radios and will be able to communicate "directly from their laptop computers in emergency vehicles to access FBI databases, department of motor vehicle license plate lookups and other services - freeing up dispatch to deal with other more pressing 911 emergency situations," the press release said. Officials from Catcher said they wanted to use the Vivato network because of its effectiveness over rural areas and its long-range capabilities. Los Lunas is located just south of Albuquerque and has 20 police cars and three fire trucks all equipped with wireless communications technology. The rural WiFi network is supported by 12 Vivato base stations and 17 Vivato micro cells. Allan Rakos, the president of Vivato Networks said in the press release, "We are delivering on our vision of providing extended range, wireless network infrastructure and multi-functional client platforms combined with standards-based solutions." Both companies' officials said the recent developments represented a synergy of technology and forward thinking in the community.
