Maryland magnet school focuses homeland security courses for students | 11.27.2007 | 06:48:00 | Views: 5618 | ID: November 27 '07: The Examiner in Maryland has reported that a homeland security magnet program at the Joppatowne High School is focusing courses such as security analysis, chemical warfare, first response, Arabic-language training and history classes for its students. Officials from the Harford County Public School system said the courses would help with college and career opportunities. To allay some critical fears of the school becoming "a training ground for the military-industrial complex" the Examiner reported, school official Frank Mazzanotte said, "Far from just terrorism, we deal with an understanding of cultures and religions and the history behind where we've got to." "The Homeland Security program started this fall, but the school plans to host local and state government officials at an opening today," the Examiner reported. "Since its launch in August, students have taken a field trip to the U.S. Coast Guard's cutter and taken quizzes on the wildfires in California." Out of a total pool of 110 students interested in the program, about 61 were selected.
