Coast Guard installing Rescue 211 system | 12.12.2007 | 07:28:25 | Views: 5755 | ID: December 12 '07: Government Executive reported that the Coast Guard is expanding its coverage and use of the Rescue 211 system - a digital disaster and emergency response communications framework which will replace the National Distress Response System. The new wireless "command-and-control system" is being built by General Dynamics C4 Systems based in Scottsdale, Arizona. The new system will be used for "port security and enhanced direction technology for maritime search and rescue in the New York and Delaware Bay areas in January 2008," GovExec reported. Coast Guard Capt. Mike Christian said the new enhanced technology will enable search and rescue teams to pinpoint the location of distress calls. The system will cost $735 million to build. It will be installed "over the next 14 months and eventually will provide wireless communication along 95,000 miles of coastline and waterways," GovExec reported.
