Vocera builds wireless communications devices for hospital networks | 01.11.2008 | 12:13:11 | Views: 7000 | ID: January 11 '08: Vocera Communications has built a wireless communications device which uses WiFi, VoIP and speech recognition to connect doctors, nurses and EMS personnel working in hospitals. The technology operates over a wireless LAN (802.11) and is controlled by a small talking device which can be worn on the sleeve of scrubs or a jacket. In a company release the company said its Vocera Communications System has been used by health networks comprised of hospitals, practices and specialty locations such as radiology labs, and general hospitals which are using the wireless networking capabilities. At El Camino Hospital in Silicone Valley, California, Hospital Clinical Manager Chris Tarver said during a horizontal evacuation during a fire, personnel used the communications device as their "primary communication tool" and that they "were able to deploy staff where needed and find out exactly how many patients needed to be moved." Tarver said that the device has been included in the official disaster preparedness plan.
