Local Miami college joins community emergency alert network | 02.11.2008 | 07:00:27 | Views: 6107 | ID: February 11 '08: Miami Dade College will join the local Miami wireless emergency network system (WENS) Campus Technology reported. The Miami-Dade County network's capability is provided by Inspiron Logistics and it will allow officials to use a multi-media platform to release information, announcements and alerts to students, faculty and staff at the college. "Currently, MDC uses a number of resources, such as hotlines, the Web, voicemail, the media, and press releases to notify its community of a college emergency," Campus Technology reported. "The new program, Miami Dade College Alerts, adds the capability for the school to notify registered users through text messaging, personal e-mail, and pagers." Similar services have been developing in other parts of the country. In New York City, the Notify Now program was launched in December of '07. Several pilot communities in Lower Manhattan, the Rockaways, Northeast Bronx, Southwest Staten Island and other areas of the city will begin testing the service which is provided by Send Word Now. The service is a sign-up-based system and registered users will receive messages about large-scale emergencies such as hurricanes, terrorist attacks or any other catastrophe. The "system is aimed at the MDC college community - students, family, faculty, and staff," Campus Technology reported. The registration process is in English, however users will be able to set their own language for alerts.
