IBM develops 3-D virtual business solution | 02.29.2008 | 11:00:55 | Views: 5707 | ID: February 29 '08: Continuity Central has reported a new development from IBM that allows a 3-D virtualization of a business environment. According to the company's press release the new solution can bring in "real-time data from different facilities into a 3-D environment to visualize hot spots, data flow, server utilization and more to better monitor and manage the entire IT platform." The press release goes on to say that the solution is ideal "for exercises in space, power, and cooling planning, training, and disaster recovery scenarios. Users can move assets, interact with them, and drive them with real or simulated data." The solution is based on the OpenSim Application Platform for 3D Virtual Worlds, the same platform used by researchers at Idaho State University's Bioterrorism Awareness and Preparedness Program who developed the Play2Train Open Content Alliance and the SecondLife virtual community. Currently, the Swiss construction, building services and real estate company Implenia is using the technology to give them a real-time situational awareness of their HVAC and security systems. "Currently, Implenia manages eight pilot sites including data center that is managed by managed by different tools and technologies." IBM said that at the heart of the 3-D technology is the "virtual world integration middleware, Holographic Enterprise Interface (HEI), that links real-world data center operations center in cyberspace to their Building automation interface."
