New study finds areas for improvement in interops communications | 04.24.2008 | 07:51:24 | Views: 7377 | ID: April 24 '08: The Network Centric Operations Industry Consortium, an international non-profit which works to integrate existing open standards communications frameworks around the globe, recently announced a new study and key findings of its Network-enabled Emergency Response project. The NEER project had two-key assertions: that every response organization should migrate all communications to IP capability; and that there should be a nation-wide "map-defined electronic registry of all emergency response organizations, their responsibilities and their information routing information." Vice Chairman for NCOIC Terry Morgan said in a press release of the findings, "We're not talking about building a new network or asking responders to abandon their radios. ... (Everything over IP) EoIP can transmit voice, video, data and text to devices and software applications they own and operate now. In this network-centric approach, responder systems can find out who has the vital information and who is allowed to send or receive it." David Aylward, director of COMCARE Emergency Response Alliance and the vice chairman of the NCOIC's NEER project said in the press release, "Today, sharing emergency information takes a series of phone calls, a lot of duplication and precious time that responders can't afford to lose. ... Without an organizational registry and rights management, what we call 'core services,' emergency communications in the future would be like using a telephone system without a phone book and having all responders on one big conference call." The NEER project has partnered with European industry and government leaders as well as US private and public sector leaders. Currently, Google has a Homeland Security and Infrastructure technology capability which overlays geographical information and mapping capabilities.
