New earthquake preparedness and safety report released

April 25 '08: The National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program has released its new 2008 earthquake reduction program that "outlines a cooperative program of earthquake monitoring, research, implementation, education, and outreach activities performed by the NEHRP," the Naval Postgraduate School Center for Homeland Defense and Security reported.

The new hazards reduction outline comes into context with the recent earthquake activity in the Midwest. Seismologists have said the 5.2 magnitude tremor near the Memphis area came from the Wabash Valley Fault and not the New Madrid Fault as previously thought.

In fact, officials said they believe the new activity from the Wabash Valley Fault is a harbinger of things to come. "The Wabash Valley Fault could be the more dangerous (fault) ... at least for St. Louis and Illinois," Douglas Wiens, Ph.D. said. "The strongest earthquakes in the last few years have come from the Wabash Valley Fault, which needs more investigation."

According to the NEHRP outline, 75 million people in the country live in urban areas "with moderate to high earthquake risk. The NRC (National Research Council) ... notes that the estimated value of structures in all states prone to earthquake damage is approximately $8.6 (2003 dollars)."
