New WiMax nationwide network planned | 05.08.2008 | 11:17:10 | Views: 6619 | ID: May 08 '08: According to the New York Times a partnership of telecomm and technology companies have announced a new nationwide wireless Internet network which will provide high-speed data accessibility for laptops and mobile phones using the WiMax platform. The Associated Press reported that network will come after the merger of Sprint/Nextel and Clearwire. The AP also reported that the new network would create a boon for consumers: "Rather than buying a cell phone with a monthly minute plan," the AP wrote, "you could be buying a device that gives you unlimited use of voice-over-Internet services like Ebay Inc.'s Skype." According to Marketplace the new information and data network would increase high speed Internet access to rural communities, which could help to link emergency medical and other services to previously out-of-reach places. The Times reported, "The wireless network of the future is expected to be fast enough - rivaling speeds that cable consumers have in their homes today - to allow delivery of not just text and simple Web pages, but of video and advertising." The companies who helped with the new network merger are Google, Sprint/Nextel, Intel, Comcast, Time Warner and Clearwire.
