July 10 '07: Kershaw County school system in South Carolina announced recently that it has installed an emergency and crisis management system for the 2007-2008 school year according to GIS User.com article posted by the network's company, Prepared Response Inc..
The new Rapid Responder© Crisis Management System provides first responders "more than 300 pieces of data including tactical plans, floor plans, aerial and geospatial (GIS) imagery, interior and exterior photos, staging areas, hazardous materials quantities and locations, utility shut-offs, and evacuation routes for all schools," the site read.

In a press release, the company said that so far nationwide, more than 1000 schools are using the computer database and network software.

Funding for the system was provided, in large part, through federal funding by the Department of Homeland Security. "District personnel, along with the Kershaw County Sheriff's Office, Kershaw County Fire, and Camden Police and Fire Departments were trained on the system in June." The Kershaw County school systems plans to have the system go online by the time students begin school on August 20.
