DHS launches Ready Business Mentoring Initiative | 05.24.2006 | 08:52:10 | Views: 5611 | ID: May 24 '06: The Department of Homeland Security announced Wednesday the creation of the Ready Business Mentoring Initiative, a program designed "to help owners and managers of small and medium-sized businesses prepare for emergencies." The program will work in partnership with several federal agencies including the Department of Commerce, the Small Business Administration, and the Department of Agriculture. Along with federal cooperation, the program will also have help from private sector organizations and companies which will work to provide educational materials and host workshops designed to foster emergency preparedness thinking among small business owners. Already, there are outlets of information from DHS for business owners through the Ready Business program. On its website, Ready Business provides information to companies on ways to help keep employers and employees informed about ways to help foster communication and emergency planning in the workplace. The Mentoring Initiative will issue two workbooks, one a "Mentor Edition" and another a "User Edition" which will "enable businesses to create and execute an emergency preparedness plan," as well as cooperate with the Extension Disaster Education Network, "to develop presentation materials that will assist businesses and community leaders in hosting business preparedness workshops across the nation." EDEN, a multi-state clearinghouse collaborative for information and resources for disaster mitigation, preparedness, response and recovery, based at Louisiana State University, is designing a course for business owners and those "interested in helping small and medium-sized businesses survive potential disaster."
