DHS works to prepare elderly and disabled | 09.07.2006 | 05:34:45 | Views: 5959 | ID: September 7 '06: A cooperative effort by the Department of Homeland Security with several non-profit and community service organizations is working to help the elderly and those with disabilities in preparing for national emergencies - both natural and man-made, a DHS press release read. The organizations: the National Organization on Disability; the National Fire Protection Agency; the AARP; and the American Red Cross' participation are all a part of the Department's National Preparedness Month during September. The cooperation includes new information for the elderly and disabled with "brochures highlighting the key preparedness steps older and disabled Americans and their families and caretakers should take before emergencies occur. ... Through its Ready Campaign, DHS encourages all Americans to get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the types of emergencies that can happen and their appropriate responses." Homeland Security's Under Secretary for Preparedness George Forseman said, "National Preparedness Month, the anniversaries of the 9/11 terrorist attacks and last year's devastating hurricanes serve as serious reminders that emergency preparedness is important for all citizens, especially older Americans and people with disabilities."
