Pandemic plan using quarantine and control measures | 10.13.2006 | 07:03:27 | Views: 6508 | ID: October 13 '06: The Associated Press reported Friday that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta is pushing a new pandemic quarantine plan using "primitive infection-control" measures to mitigate the impact of a large-scale infection from bird flu or another disease while vaccines and drugs are being developed. The plan calls for people to remain at home, as well for interstate commerce and travel to slow or to halt if a pandemic were to happen. Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health are "surveying Americans ... as the government wraps up work on" the plan. "This week, CDC awarded $5.2 million in grants related to the plan, including research on whether to recommend face masks to the public," the AP reported. "CDC also asked the Institute of Medicine ... to meet on these measures later this month. ... The CDC plan will list multiple scenarios for pandemics that range in severity or attack certain age groups like children or college students, and recommend corresponding control measures. .. These will include voluntary isolation of the sick people, voluntary quarantine for those exposed to the germ but are not ill, and protective sequestration to separate health people or communities from a source of infection."
