Dallas approves interoperable network | 11.21.2006 | 03:20:39 | Views: 6031 | ID: November 21 '06: Dallas law enforcement officials, medical first responders, firefighters and aviation agencies will have access to a fully interoperable communications service which will allow video, radio, and data services to be linked via an interoperable network, Government Technology's Public CIO reported recently. The network was released to the responder community after the Dallas City Council gave its final approval of the network. "The service being in Dallas leverages CoCo Communications' software protocol which rides on top of existing network infrastructures," Public CIO reported. "The protocol ... [eliminates] communication breakdown created by systems that simply do not 'talk' with each other because of differing frequencies or operating systems." Dallas First Assistant Chief of Police David Brown said, "This is a must-have service ... we must have interoperability among radio communications systems for all police, law enforcement, fire and government agencies. ... This is a potentially life-saving technology." Dallas Fire Chief Eddie Burns Sr. told Public CIO, "It is important that I have the ability to communicate not only with my firefighters but also with other agencies - we are the first line of defense when it comes to manmade and natural disasters. ... Having the capability to communicate with other cities, departments and agencies will enhance the capabilities of all first responders." All those using the network will be able communicate and send data, video or messaging using a variety of devices which include radios, PDA's and mobile devices such as cell phones and laptop computers by linking to existing wireless carriers.
