Indiana community working for self-reliance during disasters | 01.24.2007 | 07:04:57 | Views: 5499 | ID: January 24 '07: In Gary, Indiana, first responders are working with local medical, utility and government officials to develop a resource guide which would serve as an important reference to help the local Gary community stay prepared and ready for a disaster for the first 72 hours the Post-Tribune reported. The plan, developed by Gary City Council member Chuck Hughes (D-at large), was "inspired by the flooding of parts of Gary, Highland and Griffith four months ago," the Post-Tribune reported. Since the flooding, at least three meeting have been held to develop the plan. Among those participating, the Methodist Hospitals, Edgewater Systems for Balanced Living, NiSource and the city's local fire and police departments. Jeff Miller, the emergency management director for Lake County told the Post-Tribune that the plan would include using the "211" system to clear the "911" lines during an emergency. Organizers hope the plan's development will be ready for implementation soon. After completion of the plan, Hughes told the Post-Tribune he would submit the plan to the Gary City Council.
