Hybrid vehicle response training in Missouri | 02.13.2007 | 07:45:39 | Views: 5271 | ID: February 13 '07: With the rise of hybrid vehicles on the road, emergency responders on the scene of an accident are faced with new electrical and airbag systems, and batteries in the cars that could create hazards after an accident. The Oberly Monitor Index reported that a new program has begun to train Missourian first responders on hybrid vehicles with the cooperation with Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety. Bill Whitfield from the Missouri Highway Safety Division told the Index, "With hybrid cars and airbag safety features becoming more common, it's essential that our first responders to crash sites know how to handle the potential dangers of undeployed airbags and high-voltage vehicle battery systems. ... We have received such a tremendous response," from area responders to the classes. Part of the class will include airbags being deployed by experts to show how they act during an emergency. As well vehicle systems will be examined by responders. Future classes will be considered while more than 1,800 responders have signed onto the classes scheduled for February and March.
