Alabama responders found problems communicating during recent severe weather disaster | 03.14.2007 | 08:41:12 | Views: 6079 | ID: March 14 '07: Recently Alabama Homeland Security officials installed an $18 million radio communications system to boost capabilities for the state's first responders, EMS and police and fire officials. However, the Associated Press reported that during a recent severe weather disaster responders had difficulty talking with one another. At the heart of the problem, officials told the AP, was not the technology but that responders were using "cell phones or walkie-talkies connected to the cell phone system - and it was overloaded." Alabama Homeland Security Director Jim Walker said in an interview with the Associated Press, "People were frustrated, but all they had to do was turn on their radios." According to the AP, officials and experts said that though the technology was available and could have helped. Responders, just like other people "tend to be creatures of habit and our habit these days is the cell phone," Rosanna Guadagno, a social psychology professor at the University of Alabama said.
