New poll shows lack of preparedness in U.S. among communities | 05.10.2007 | 14:03:00 | Views: 5563 | ID: May 10 '07: About one-third of Americans are not ready to respond to a disaster according to a new poll released by the American Public Health Association, the Center for Infectious Disease Research & Policy reported. In the poll most said that they knew they were not prepared enough. Other findings in the report showed that about one-quarter of those polled were adequately prepared and that at least 40 percent of respondents said in the months after the attacks on September 11 they took steps to prepare. Also, about 46 percent said they had not assembled a disaster supply kit. According to CIDRAP, "The 17-page survey report says term "public health crisis" does not resonate with people, though respondents reported being concerned about specific events, such as natural disasters, that might lead to one." The largest reason for not taking steps to prepare was the cost of the preparedness kits, the poll said, CIDRAP reported.
