Forecasters urge oil industry to move stockpiles before hurricane season | 05.24.2007 | 08:36:02 | Views: 5247 | ID: May 24 '07: According to Reuters forecasters have urged the oil industry to move their stockpiles away from the Gulf Coast before the start of the 2007 hurricane season to protect U.S. supplies. The suggestion was made after weather predictions for this year's summer storm season harbinged an active cycle with some saying it is "almost certain there is going to be significant production disruption in the Gulf of Mexico this year." Storm tracker Chuck Watson told the international news wire service, "We're really urging the oil industry to keep the stocks outside the Southeast as high as you can because otherwise you risk disrupting the whole country if there is a storm impact." Additional fears of rising summer costs of petroleum from lower production levels and a shift to alternative fuels have added to worry. Forecasters said that much of the 852 coastal counties affected by potential storms have have a good chance of getting hit by a hurricane this summer and that those chances are rising from potential changes in Atlantic and Gulf water temperatures.
