National Service to increase disaster response and preparedness programs | 06.18.2007 | 08:13:04 | Views: 5533 | ID: June 18 '07: The Corporation for National & Community Service has announced that it will increase its disaster response and preparedness efforts in the Gulf Coast area as well as other parts of the country through greater cooperation with state and local governments. In its press release, the agency said it will "develop common objectives and measurable targets to make the national service enterprise even more effective in its disaster preparedness and response work." Currently, the Corporation (as it is called) is involved in several programs geared toward increasing its disaster response capability, the press release said. Such activities include disaster recovery grants to communities totaling $900,000; construction of more than 20 homes in one week using the cooperation of 500 AmeriCorps volunteers; and a "Disaster Institute" to help train those who receive help from AmeriCorps for disaster preparedness. The Corporation also has begun to deploy "Disaster Coordinator Cadres" to major disaster sites to help coordination with FEMA representatives "noting how national service programs can provide additional value in the areas of volunteer management, mass care, and infrastructure support."
