Indianapolis suburb installing city-wide WiFi network for responders and community | 06.25.2007 | 06:56:21 | Views: 5592 | ID: June 25 07: The IndyStar.com website reported that a suburb of Indianapolis, Beech Grove, has been working to build a city-wide WiFi network which will have a public safety portal and a public access network. The new network will be the second to be installed in the Indianapolis metro area, IndyStar reported. According to the site, "Officials envision the system ... to help with information sharing among emergency responders and allow residents to log on from virtually anywhere in the city." Three vendors were selected for construction of the network: Federal Signal for coordination; Strix Systems for hardware; and Unplugged Cities for the service provider. Beech Grove Fire Chief Dennis Buckley said the new system will benefit emergency response because, "It allow us to access the Internet while we're moving down the road. ... It will allow us to do better planning. ... [Emergency response] could theoretically see the accident scene before they leave the fire station, so they know what they're up against." The network will be financed initially by an $80,000 allocation then through paid subscriptions, the IndyStar reported.
